I love regency romances! I've read many of this author's books and liked them, even loved some. This book was very bland for me. It had an intriguing premise - young lady flees uncle cross country to become innkeeper. The heroine was mildly compelling - pretty, smart, and level-headed. The hero was also compelling - handsome, aristocratic, and loyal. They had almost no chemistry. The storyline was bland and predictable. I usually like this author's writing style, but I found this book to have far too much inner contemplation. Overall, not a bad book but for me very flat.

I haven’t read a bad one yet!
I LOVE ANY AND ALL OF HER BOOKS....
I seriously cannot rave enough about STEPHANIE LAURENS books.
The first one is as good as the second, third, fourth as many as she has written ....LOL )
Any of her book's or series is just as interesting as the first one you begin reading .
Awesome, excellent reading... I would recommend any and all STEPHANIE LAURENS Books.
Once you read just one of her books ) you just wont want to ever stop ,
Jonas has returned to his home in Devon after having lived life to the fullest in London. He is trying to re-establish the "family" ancestral home as an inn. He needs someone to manage the inn as the old manager has "passed".

Emily is an impoverished noblewoman with siblings to care for and a secret. She offers to manage the inn for Jonas. The secret involves treasure and intertwines the two families.

While not the best of the Cynster novels, this book has just the right amount of mystery, tension and humor to entice the reader.

And of course the Cynsters are involved. An enjoyable read.
Maybe it's because I've read all the others up to this point - but when the villan is easily pinpointed from the moment we are introduced to him - and the mysterious location sought - just as easily figured out - it takes from the aura of mystery and suspense.

I also found the cover distasteful - for the era within the story does not match it by any means.
this cover looks more like a modern day affair rather than the spectacular days of balls and reticules, rakes and rogues.

I love this series otherwise - and will continue to stay up with it - and hold onto it
Brilliant! There were a few negative reviews but more positive reviews so am glad that I followed my instincts in purchasing this book. The only thing that I don't care for are the too frequent & all too descriptive sex scenes. I'm not a prude, but the author's talent in the story lines are able to stand on their own. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book very much!
I'm actually a big fan of Ms. Laurens. I've read every single installment of her Cynster and Bastion club series. But what I am NOT a fan of is some authors' tendencies to over use their 'standard' phrases. Meaning, early in their career they "invent" a clever description or phrase. Then proceed to use that phrase over and over in every subsequent novel. "Her lungs seized" happens to be Ms. Laurens's favored phrase and it annoys me enough to throw me straight out of the narrative and my comfy suspension of disbelief.

As for the book itself, it is definitely not her best work. I'd probably say mediocre. I liked the characters, REALLY liked the inclusion of Phyllida and Lucifer (some of my favorites from her world). What I didn't like was the complete lack of suspense in the treasure hunt (I had it figured out much too soon), the lack of real menace with BOTH kidnappings of the twins, and the way the ending seemed slapped together. The setting, also, was extremely sketchy. There was far, far more detail in All About Love, Lucifer's story. I also, predictably, skimmed/skipped the sex scenes because they are far too explicit and repetitive for me.

It's nice to read Jonas's story--who has a far more direct Cynster connection that some of the previous 'Cynster' novels. But I honestly think Ms. Laurens has been writing about the family far too long. Time to challenge herself in both substance and phrases. Please, I'm begging you, no more seizing lungs.
I have to agree with the previous reviewer, this love/sex scenes were way too long, didn't add anything to the plot, and if I had been "reading" the book I would have skipped them completely after the first one. But I was listening to the audio version so in order to make sure I didn't miss something important I had to PLOD my way through every one of them. By the time I got to the end of this book I was so sick of those love scenes I was ready to give this book a minus 5 rating. Cooler heads have prevailed and my advice is this buy an abridged audio version. If the abridgement it good, they will shorten all that redundant lovemaking and keep to the fun parts of the book. If you are reading it in HC or PB, well then you can skip them!

For those who love long drawn out sex/love scenes, well then this book is for you. I am not sure that it is at all believable that a 25 year old single woman back in the early 19th century would have been allowed to carry on like this in a small village, and in particular one who was going to be closely related to clergy, but hey, it's fiction, so go with it. This book was way below the quality of previous Cynster novels, and I have read and own them all.

I won't buy any more Laurens novels without reading reviews first, though. It I had come here first I would have surely stayed away from the unabridged audio version.
